South Mexican Union Conference

We applied, as you know, for a mission site in the South Mexican Union Conference. This conference can be divided into 3 distinct climate areas: Pacific Coast, Central Mexico, and Yucatan Peninsula.

The Pacific Coast area (the blue area on the above map) is located on the south rim of Mexico along the Pacific Ocean. It is lined by tropical beaches and is bordered on the south by Belize and Guatemala.

Central Mexico (the red area on the map above) is known as the “historic core” of Mexico and surrounds the capital city, Mexico City. It sits on the Gulf of Mexico and it is a temperate forest area.

The Yucatan Peninsula (the green area seen above) is a jungle region on the Caribbean coast and the Gulf of Mexico. It is host to Spanish ruins and Maya pyramids. Like the Pacific Coast region, it is bordered on the south by Belize and Guatemala.

The official language is Spanish and they have about 60 indigenous languages. In the border cities and tourists destinations, English is the primary language. Elsewhere you will find the higher classes and younger people being multi-lingual. They are a religious people with about 89% being Roman Catholic, 6% Protestant, and 5% Other Religion. The people of this land are conservative, courteous, and loving.

According to the Seventh-day Adventist World Church as of 9/10/08, the Inter-American Division has 964 Adventist churches and 276,216 members in a country with a total population of 9,637,091. They have one Adventist university, one hospital, and 8 secondary schools in the conference.

Once we are given a specific site, I will be able to give you information focused on that region. Until then, keep praying for God to guide us where He would have us serve.

12/21/08 Addition to Blog Entry: Only a few of the climate areas of Mexico are shown above. The South Mexican Union Conference is located across a part of each of the 3 regions listed above. Please see the map below for the area of this conference (located south of the Inter-Oceanic Mexican Union Concerence and north of Guatemala and Belize; its shape is similar to our most northeastern states--Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut).
